REFLECTION

Throughout the unit through reflection many great challenges were faced within gathering the understanding of effective communication. Certain definitions and topics were hard to grasp and understand. However, in saying this while there were many challenges the outcomes were more rewarding, it allowed me to gather knowledge of effective communication skills and first-hand demonstrations. With time, future experience as a future therapeutic recreational officer I am confident that the knowledge will become greater as I will continue to learn different approaches as I am introduced to different individuals with different communication skills and levels.

In learning that communication is not only about conversating with an individual, barriers can come between the professional and the client. I have also learnt the difference between sympathy and empathy. Within saying this I am confident that this will allow me to apply different effective communication skills that was not knowledgably to me before to my future clients. Within saying this I have gathered valuable skills in helping me be more client centred and taking client centred approaches. In also learning how to communicate with individuals I am also aware of active listening and building rapport. This unit has taught me fundament lessons on how active listening contributes to myself becoming aware of clients’ needs and goals, these fundamental skills can future help within my future endeavours to help my client with more severe issues they may face and begin to give me their trust so that bigger issues can be addressed, and goals can be met.
